Impala’s client was building a new home on the water in Sydney’s Southern suburbs. The client engaged Impala to design and build all the joinery on this project, including the kitchen/s, bathroom cabinets, study, wardrobes and entertainment units.
The kitchen was situated in the main focal point of the home and was to be much more than a cooking area, it needed to seamlessly blend into the open space, providing a practical area for casual meals. To this end, Impala designed a timber drop-down table coming from the island unit and a tall wall of veneer joinery to house the fridge and several other built in appliances. The rest of the island was to be free of sinks or appliances so the bench top can double as a serving area and remain clean when not in use. The storage area and additional “messy” food preparation is hidden by a walk in pantry which can be accessed through a tall door to the left of the appliances. This allows for maximum storage and further bench top space whilst keeping the visible kitchen space neat and tidy – handy when visitors come.
Material selection was critical to the client who wanted the marble piece behind the cooktop to be focal point. This stone piece was selected by the client at the wholesaler. The timber used was to complement the client’s furniture to allow for cohesion in the open plan area. Stark white stone was used on the rest of the island and overhead cabinets to allow the other materials to sing out. Finally concrete-coloured tiles were used on the floor to define the kitchen space and provide a practical surface.
