Family Friendly Kitchen

From Retro Nightmare to Family Friendly Kitchen, A young family in Sydney’s leafy Hills
district had a kitchen and bathroom from the 1960’s in dire need of a renovation. Crazy
colours, leaking fittings and peeling wall paper meant the renovation was urgent before the
arrival of the client’s second baby so timeline management was crucial to the success of this
project.

Walls were removed and the footprint completely altered to open the kitchen up to the
adjacent dining and lounge areas. The enhanced kitchen layout features a massive central
island that is a true social hub for family time with exceptional storage and enough
benchspace to make food preparation and socialisation stress free for the whole family.

The appliance/ pantry keeps the kitchen clutter free with appliances off the bench and the
wingline door offers easy access to drygoods and storage. A family size fridge caters for the
growing family and is positioned out of the cooking and preparation zone.

The barn door was added to keep the hallway as spacious as possible and to minimise noise
when children are napping in the nearby bedroom wing of the home.

Further renovations are planned down the track to add a deck with wingline doors to open
up to the pool and alfresco area when the kids are a little older. Feature handles with timber
and gold highlights were chosen for their practicality and to add character and warmth to
the light coloured kitchen.

White, airy paint colours were chosen to open up the space and make the most of the
clients collection of artworks which brings a beautiful pop of colour to the space. The
Australian native print by Carmen Hui and indigenous artwork by Hayley Pearson add colour
to the kitchen and set the tone for the colours used throughout the entire home.
