Impala’s client was building a new home in Sydney’s North West. The client engaged Impala to design and build the kitchen and bathroom joinery on this project.
The kitchen was open plan and the brief was to use bold materials, encompass several commercial style appliances and to afford space for eating meals. Materials were to be contemporary yet also tactile. The client wanted to steer away from “softer hues” and went for strong bold natural materials.
The island was to be a focal point for the kitchen design. To this end, the coffered ceiling was centred above the island to define the space and marble stone slabs selected for the kitchen island were a feature as was the light suspended above. The white stone perpendicular to the dark marble acts as a table top for meals and contrasts starkly with the rest of the island unit. The kitchen floor cabinets were kept white and the flooring neutral so that the island unit could stand out. Overhead cabinets are a dark timber grain, complementing the marble used in the island.
From a functional perspective, the key kitchen appliances are at an ergonomic height and the full sized double fridge and freezer are centred near the eating space. The sink is under a full length splashback window to allow natural light when preparing food and washing up. In the corner of the kitchen (a space often awkward to access) a useful bi-folding cabinet sits atop the bench top to hide small counter appliances such as a kettle and toaster.
This large well designed kitchen meets the client’s brief to design a space for serious food preparation and casual eating.
