Impala’s client lived in an old style cottage in an established suburb in Sydney. The home was literally a Captain’s cottage in the 1800’s and it still maintained a lot of historic features. In keeping with the character of the home, our client wanted to highlight the gorgeous sandstone blocks and wide timber floor boards. The brief was a kitchen with modern conveniences but not over-powering the natural beauty of the cottage. Impala designed a kitchen with a neutral colour scheme and warm timber. Lighting was important as there were no windows in the kitchen area and the sandstone features are best appreciated when lit-up. To this end, Impala installed up and downlights behind the kitchen cabinets. To protect the sandstone from cooking spills and splashes, Impala installed clear Perspex behind the cooktop. The simple stone bench top and stainless steel shadowlines in the kitchen balance the design proportionately with the detailed features in the space such as the rafters on the ceiling and high ornate skirting boards. The result is a kitchen which works harmoniously with the cottage interior. Impala also designed and made wardrobes for the home which are shown in the images below.
