Waterview Kitchen @ Concord
This project had a number of challenges for a design perspective and for installation. This beautiful penthouse apartment overlooked the calming waters of Canada Bay. The previous kitchen was only 6 years old, but it was a galley style kitchen which meant it was cut off from rest of the home and don’t get to enjoy the beautiful water views. To take full advantage of the water views walls needed to be removed. A considerable issue was one of those walls was structural therefore it needed to be taken into consideration into the design which was overseen by engineers and approved by the Strata. To add additional challenges the apartment was located on the top floor and there was no service lift which meant all building works needed to be manage via the residences lift, in accordance with the strata rules and with consideration to other residences. Impala managed all the above issues on behalf of the client to deliver stunning results.
Design Brief
The client desired a modern kitchen space that would become the heart of the home, plus take full advantage of the water views.
Description
With the removal of the walls, Impala Designer Andrew Wright created a stunning, multi-purpose kitchen which has a ultra-modern, multicolour and a multi-textural theme that integrates the kitchen into the apartment. The result of removing the walls; this kitchen sits truly as the new heart of the family apartment.
This kitchen provides privacy for the sink, whilst showcasing the breakfast bar. Design elements include preparation and serving space and storage for pantry and wine.
As mentioned this job came with some challenges. Originally the kitchen was designed without the post wall, however, the engineer’s report required a steel post to be installed. So Andrew cleverly designed the cover panels to match the end of the privacy wall. The approval process was overseen by the Impala Team to ensure all requirements were met.
Design Detail
The horizontal timber grain, with five-millimetre black lines, gives a strong architectural detail. The kitchen sits between the living and dining rooms, close to the front door and near to an entertaining deck. As you enter the front door because of the privacy wall, which houses the waste pipe stack, this kitchen cannot be seen; giving total privacy.
This kitchen conforms to all kitchen design guidelines with a good work triangle and plenty of space on both sides of the cooktop. There is ample bench space next to the fridge and oven, with garbage bins on the left of the sink and dishwasher on the right. This kitchen incorporates highly technical detail that is difficult to execute. The timber bench apron detail allowed the handle and stone tops to be integrated. The flyover lighting panel, with black line sectional detail, gives task lighting to sink, preparation and serving areas. The layered post with black lines and mitred corners and the deep rake continuous handles combine to create a kitchen with textural elegance and a visually appealing design.
The result is simply stunning. A kitchen that now ensures the cook enjoys the water views, the kitchen bench allows the space to be used for eating and entertaining and work-stations which are functional combined with not being in the line of sight for the rest of the home. Creating a modern kitchen that is now truly the heart of the home.
